Publishing

From manuscript to files your printer will accept

The wizard walks you through everything a store or printer will ask for: front matter, typesetting, cover, description, categories and ISBN. At the end you download EPUB, a print PDF and metadata, with no fixing files in other programs.

What you get at release

  1. Files that meet the spec

EPUB 3 with accessibility metadata, print-ready PDF/X-3 and ONIX 3.1 validated against the EDItEUR schema.

  2. A cover built from your layout

The spine follows from page count and paper, the bleed from your printer’s requirements. Your artwork fits the size first time.

  3. Description and categories from your book

Draft descriptions start from your chapter summaries and your own style. Every keyword shows its search volume, so you know which ones people actually type.

How it works

  1. Front matter

Title page, copyright page with ISBN, dedication, table of contents and author bio.

  2. Book design

Six typesetting themes, typefaces with full European character sets, chapter styling and page preview.

  3. Cover

Ebook cover and print wraparound with spine, bleed and barcode.

  4. Description and categories

Store description, back cover copy, one-line pitch, genre, Thema and keywords.

  5. Files

A checklist of what’s missing before release, then export: EPUB, interior PDF, cover, ONIX.

What we support

The full list of what goes into your files. Everything is calculated from a single layout, so ebook, print and metadata all say the same thing.

Ebook

  • EPUB 3 with footnotes, table of contents and embedded fonts
  • Accessibility metadata required by the European Accessibility Act, or a declared micro-enterprise exemption
  • JPG cover at 1600 × 2560 px, the size the major stores accept
  • Series, contributors with roles and original title in the file metadata

Print

  • Interior PDF in PDF/X-3, grayscale, with embedded fonts and an even page count
  • Wraparound cover in CMYK (PDF/X-3), EAN barcode in pure black
  • Trim sizes A5, B5, 145 × 205 mm, 125 × 195 mm and 6 × 9 in
  • Printer profiles: standard, Amazon KDP and Empik, each with its own bleed and gutter margin
  • Spine width calculated from page count and the thickness of the chosen paper

Metadata

  • Separate ISBNs for ebook and print, with check digit validation
  • ONIX 3.1 for distributors and aggregators
  • Thema categories and BISAC codes for the US market
  • Edition, reader age and the generated-content declaration KDP asks for
  • Copyright page assembled from the same data as ONIX

Description and sales

  • Store description, back cover copy and one-line pitch, each in three tones
  • Drafts based on chapter summaries, not just the title
  • Genre and shelf with exact Thema codes
  • Keywords with monthly Google search volume

Your files, your choice of store

Vellam is not a distributor and takes no commission on sales. You download finished files and send them to a printer, bookstore or aggregator. You get your ISBN from your national ISBN agency (Bowker in the US, Nielsen in the UK) and enter it in the wizard.
